industrial research
We partner up with companies to put science into innovations. From strategic advice to services and hands-on co-development, BioMolecules is committed to bridging the gap between academia and industry. BioMolecules offers opportunities to collaborate, such as participation in advisory boards of EU and SBO projects, services and bilateral research collaborations, including VLAIO Baekeland mandates, Innovation mandates, or O&O-funded projects, Interreg or EU projects.
Thanks to the Industrial Research Fund of Ghent University, we have access to proof-of-concept funding.
Licensing opportunities
At BioMolecules we offer businesses access to a portfolio of cutting-edge technologies and patents open for licensing opportunities, in the following fields:
- (Oligo)saccharides for novel food, cosmetics and pharma
- Microbial strains
- Glycosylation technologies for cosmetics
- Biosurfactants
- Rapid digestion tests for nutrition
- Dicarboxylic acids for biobased chemicals and materials
- Sustainable aviation fuels (SAF)
- Novel proteins for food and feed
Core facility for synbio
At the Centre for Synthetic Biology, state-of-the-art infrastructure is available for the processing of (engineered) microbes and enzymes, and the identification of (new) products in a high-throughput way. By integrating biofoundry and bioprocess engineering, we accelerate the development of bioproducts. The facility includes a custom-made robotic platform (for DNA manipulations, pipetting, colony picking, screening, incubation, etc.), coupled HPLC-system (4 channels with automated injection), and complementary tools (multiwell readers, microfluidic devices, fermentors, etc.).
AI in biotech
BioMolecules researchers are increasingly leveraging Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning (ML) as a powerful design tool to drive innovation in industrial biotech. By utilizing AI, researchers can understand complex biological data to better optimize design and predict molecular interactions. AI in biotech enables the rapid and efficient development of biomolecules, saving both time and costs while unlocking new possibilities in industrial biotech, agriculture and environmental technology. One example is the UGent-lead EU deCYPher project.
Straininsight®
StrainInSight® is a comprehensive bacterial strain discovery platform developed by Ghent University, offering access to a private collection of over 47,000 bacterial strains from diverse sources. It features two innovative tools: the StrainInSight® Dashboard, an interactive interface for exploring strain metadata, and the StrainInSight® Genome Database, which provides annotated whole-genome sequences to facilitate the selection of strains for specific applications. These resources support advancements in biobased products and applications across various industries.
Partner up with our spin-offs
BioMolecules technologies we have been successfully valorised through several spin-offs, including:
- ProDigest: in vitro models for gastrointestinal health
- KytoS: microbial fingerpriting
- Inbiose: specialty carbohydrates
- Hydrohm: sustainable water treatment
- Avecom: microbial solutions for industry
- AmphiStar: biosurfactants
- Amalus Therapeutics: drug development
